Astronomers are steadily mapping the visible Universe by cataloging stars and galaxies. Yet the evolution of the Universe is governed largely by two invisible components: dark matter and dark energy. Dark matter shapes the formation of galaxies, while dark energy drives the accelerated expansion of the Universe. In this talk, I will focus on dark energy and explain how we use quasars — extraordinarily luminous galaxies powered by accretion onto supermassive black holes — to trace the expansion history of the Universe.
